Brushing your teeth first thing in the morning as well as before bed is the first step in keeping your gums free of disease. You should also floss thoroughly once per day, also preferably right before bed. Doing so goes a long way toward ridding you of the bothersome dental plaque that is at the center of both tooth decay and gum disease. Unfortunately, however, some of that plaque hides away in your gum pockets. In time, it turns into hardened tartar, for which the only effective remedy is a teeth cleaning. It is recommended that everyone get a twice-yearly cleaning as part of a complete oral examination. And when you do, it has two outstanding benefits: first, it eliminates all of the remaining plaque and tartar; and second, it reverses gingivitis, early stage gum disease.
